Best Cnc Oscillating Knife Blades Knives Selection For Different Materials
Best Cnc Oscillating Knife Blades Knives Selection For Different Materials
Cnc Oscillating Knife Blades Knives
The best CNC oscillating knife selection depends entirely on material density and thickness. While Electric Oscillating Tools (EOT) are standard for soft to medium-density materials up to 28mm thick, Pneumatic Oscillating Tools (POT) are required for dense or ultra-thick materials like heavy foam or rubber up to 100mm

Fabric / Textiles → Round Knife / Oscillating Knife
A round knife is preferred to minimize fraying. For dense canvas fabrics, an oscillating knife is also suitable.

Leather → Oscillating Knife (EOT) + CCD Visual System
An oscillating knife is commonly used to cut contours in genuine leather, while punching tools handle perforations. Additionally, a CCD visual system is employed to detect any defects in the leather.

Corrugated Paper / Carton Packaging → Oscillating Knife + Creasing Tool
The standard setup involves using an oscillating knife for cutting outer contours, a creasing tool for folding lines, and a V-cut tool for specialized angles or joints.

EVA / Foam Materials → Pneumatic Knife (POT) / High-Power Oscillating Knife
For foam thinner than 5mm, an ordinary oscillating knife works fine. However, thicker and harder foam requires a pneumatic knife or a 400W high-power knife to ensure straight, vertical cuts. Without this, the cutting surface may become trapezoidal.

Sealing Gaskets → Pneumatic Knife (POT) / Oscillating Knife + Punching Tool
Materials like asbestos or rubber boards require pneumatic knives for strong cutting force and clean edges. Punching tools are applied for precise perforation.

Carbon Fiber Cloth / Glass Fiber Cloth → Round Knife
A round knife is strongly recommended as drag knives or oscillating knives tend to pull fibers, potentially damaging these costly composite materials.

Films / Car Wraps → Drag Knife
For TPU invisible car wraps and PET films, a drag knife ensures the fastest and most cost-efficient cuts.

Sound-Absorbing Panels, Honeycomb Boards → V-Cut Knife
A V-cut knife is ideal for grooving and inlaying, creating three-dimensional designs for these materials.

Labels, Self-Adhesives → Kiss-Cut Knife
Depth control is critical here—only the surface layer is cut, leaving the base intact for easy peeling.

Blade Edge and Angle Guide

The geometry of the blade dictates its suitability for specific shapes and thicknesses:

Blade Angle

Best Application

Material Examples

0° (Narrow)

Perfect circles and intricate details

Acoustic panels, EPE foam

16°

Small diameters in thin, soft materials

Thin rubbers (1-3mm), gaskets

23° – 26°

Versatile, general-purpose cutting

Medium-density boards, leather

30° – 35°

Reducing drag in dense, rigid materials

Hard foam, dense rubber

Best Practice Tips for Operators
When undertaking installation, it is essential to ensure that the blade tip is perfectly centered within the holder. An off-center blade not only generates uneven vibrations but can also lead to issues such as premature breakage or a compromised edge quality, both of which can negatively affect overall performance and output.

For proper W-axis alignment, ensure that when the rotation axis reaches 0, the cutting edge is precisely oriented toward the X+ direction. This alignment guarantees an optimal angle of entry for cutting operations, leading to improved accuracy and efficiency.

Pay close attention to cooling mechanisms, especially when working with fibrous materials such as technical textiles. In these cases, utilizing serrated blades can be particularly advantageous. Serrated blades not only assist in dissipating heat more effectively but also help reduce friction during operation, protecting material quality and extending tool life.

When dealing with abrasive materials such as fiberglass or cement boards, it's advisable to select blades designed for enhanced durability and wear resistance. Diamond grit or carbide grit blades are highly recommended for these types of materials, as they provide superior resilience, ensuring consistent performance over prolonged usage.
